So what's a TFN?

A Tax File Number or TFN is your personal reference number that connects you to the tax and super system.
The TFN you’re given will be yours for life. It’s an important part of your tax and super records, as well as your identity.
Without a TFN you pay more tax and will only have limited access to government services.

Why do you need a TFN?

If you don’t add your TFN to your mobiSuper account, you won’t be able to:
  • Find your lost super
  • Make personal contributions
And, the ATO taxes you at a higher rate.

How do you get a TFN?

It’s easy to apply for a TFN, and even babies can get them. If you’re an Australian resident you can apply for a TFN at an Australia Post outlet, a Centrelink Centre or via post.

Applying at Australia Post

Applying at a Department of Human Services (Centrelink) Centre

If you’re a Centrelink customer you can apply for a TFN by:

    Visiting a Centrelink centre, remember to bring the completed application form and original identity documents.

Applying via Post

    Have copies of original identity documents certified.

Where can I find my TFN?

Here are some places to check when searching for your TFN:
  • Login to your myGov account
  • Payment summaries from your employer
  • Lodged income tax returns (this is would be from the ATO)
  • Previous super statements
  • Ask your accountant
Or you can call the ATO, they will be able to help you locate your TFN.
