Key Payday Super changes for employers

Payday Super commenced on 1 July 2026.

Paying employees SG contributions on payday

Employers must pay SG contributions on payday - whether that’s weekly, fortnightly, or monthly. The SG contributions need to be received in your employees’ super account within 7 business days. It applies to all employees eligible for super regardless of whether they are full-time, part-time or casual staff.
This has changed from the previous quarterly super payment deadlines. The last quarterly super deadline is the 28 July 2026 for super owed between 1 April – 30 June 2026.

Exceptions to payday super rules

Employers have more than the 7 business days to make super contributions when it’s;
  • An employee’s first contribution as a new employee
  • An employee has nominated a new super fund
  • For out-of-cycle payments, such as bonuses
  • In exceptional circumstances affecting multiple employers, such as flooding in the area that impacts the businesses’ safety
Ultimately, the ATO will determine what payments will qualify for out-of-cycle and exceptional circumstances. Find out more on the ATO website.

Tougher penalties for non-payment

Employers with late or missed super payments will be charged a penalty called the Super Guarantee Charge (SGC). The penalty can be 25%-50% of the outstanding amount depending on the employer’s compliance history.

Tougher penalties for failing to follow “choice of fund” rules

An employer can show the employee’s existing “stapled” fund during onboarding as well as offering the super choice form. You still need to offer the choice of fund and allow the ATO stapling process if an employee doesn’t submit their choice.
A “Choice Loading” may be charged to an employer if the fund choice rules are breached.

OTE becomes QE - “Qualifying earnings”

Under the Payday Super reforms, Qualifying Earnings (QE) includes OTE (Ordinary Time Earnings), salary sacrifice contributions, and other amounts that are currently included in an employee's salary or wages for super guarantee. These include ad hoc payments such as termination payments, commissions and bonuses. Overtime is still excluded from super guarantee payments.

ABN: 43 905 581 638
USI/SPIN: 43 905 581 638 021

Can I pay by EFT?

No. Since the introduction of SuperStream, employers need to pay using a SuperStream-compliant system. These systems allow you to make multiple super payments into different funds, with just one transfer.

Do I need an employer number with mobiSuper?

No. You don’t need to be registered with us in order to make a payment. We don't have employer numbers. Just leave the employer ID section blank.

What if my employee’s super contribution is returned?

As part of Payday Super, there will be improvements to the error messages that will accompany returned super payments. But you can check by:
  • 1
Verifying that the employee’s details are correct on your payroll system (their name, date of birth)
  • 2
Check that the employee’s super details are correct. Have they changed super funds since their last pay run?
  • 3
Cross check your Single Touch Payroll (STP) data is accurate
    • A.
Check if the super fund’s name, ABN and USI are correct. For mobiSuper, our fund details are:

      Fund name: mobiSuper
      ABN: 43 905 581 638
      USI/SPIN: 43 905 581 638 021

    • C.
Check the SG rate and amounts applied are correct.

Why can’t I see your fund name on my payroll system?

Our fund name may appear as “Professional Super / Student Super / Cruelty Free Super / Mobi Super (The Trustee for ONESUPER)” on your payroll system.
It appears as this because these funds all operate from the same sub-fund, Professional Super. If your employee is a member of one of these funds, this is the correct fund to choose in the drop down menu on your payroll system.
You may need to add the super fund to your super list before it is added as an option for your employees. If you have troubles with this, contact your payroll provider.
